CREERY WETLAND NEWLETTER APRIL 2026

Hi all

Exciting things are happening in Creery Wetland Reserve, and we’d love you to be part of it!

WEEDING

Recently appointed weeding coordinator, Bev has been busy organising weeding events. They have attracted a happy group of volunteers from the community, who gather and chatter! These events are advertised on our Facebook page ‘Creery Wetland Rehabilitation’ or email us at volunteer.focw.outlook.com. Dates and times are also posted at Creery Wetland entrance gates. We hope to see you soon!

PLANTING

The 2026 planting is now only weeks away – scheduled for first week in June – watch our Facebook page at CREERY WETLAND REHABILITATION for dates and times.

The project is now calling on YOU to help out. The planting will need people to come and plant on the day, but it will need volunteers to take on some special roles prior to the day, and on the day too. Don’t worry if this is all new to you – we’ll help you with it and you’ll be part of a happy team!

Here are some examples of volunteer opportunities:

HOLE DIGGING:

Role:

Volunteers will be needed prior to planting day to dig holes. This will make the planting of the plants easier and of better quality on the planting day.

SIGNAGE:

Role:

Volunteers to put up signs outside Dotterel Drive gate on planting day. Prior to planting day, make signs for the welcome and registration desk, planting demo and watering station.

SET UP TEAM:

Role:

To get equipment on site (equipment provided by CWP). There will be an equipment list and time line.

WELCOME AND REGISTRATION

Role:

On planting day, volunteers will ensure all planting volunteers have signed in and are registered. They will have sunscreen and insect repellent available for volunteers and advise planting volunteers where to go for the planting briefing.

BRIEFING AND PLANTING DEMO

Role:

On planting day, volunteers will give an outline of the planting process to planting volunteers, hand out buckets and trowels and give a demonstration of how to plant.

WATER STATION

Role:

On planting day, volunteers will control the use of water on the day to minimise waste. Planting volunteers will have buckets which will need to be half filled from the tank at the water station.

QUALITY CONTROL

Role:

On planting day, volunteers will be available in the planting site to help when needed and assist people to get their planting right.

CATERING

Role:

Volunteers will purchase and prepare refreshments funded by CWP for morning tea and ensure some drinking water is available on site on planting day.

SAFETY AND FIRST AID

Role:

Volunteer will keep an eye on safety around the planting site on planting day and bring any concerns to the planting coordinator’s attention. This volunteer will also have the first aid kit at hand and assist with minor injuries when needed.

POST PLANTING

WATERING

Role:

A coordinator will be needed to coordinate a schedule of volunteers to maintain plants over summer by watering every 2 – 4 weeks with 4-5L water/plant.

Volunteers will be needed to water the plants every 2 – 4 weeks over summer (October/November to March)

WEEDING

Role:

A coordinator will be needed to coordinate a weeding schedule in collaboration with DBCA with the aim to eradicate the reserve from invasive weeds which will reduce competition for nutrients and water. Current coordinator, Bev Carson.

Volunteers are needed to participate in weeding events to keep weeds away from native plants, and eradicate them from the broader reserve.

If you think you can help out, we’d love to hear from you at volunteer.focw@outlook.com

All the best from the CWP core group

Regards

Pamela Adams
